About Hope House

Hope House is a supportive family home for single mothers and children in crisis. It was founded by a group of concerned citizens, led by Margaret Dulohery. The Board of Directors began meeting in 1987 and the house began service to young mothers and their children in June of 1990.

Hope House opened relying on the dedication of volunteers to staff the home. Within several years funding to staff the home with a full-time Director and support staff was obtained. Since inception Hope House has assisted many women and preschool-aged children in taking steps toward self-sufficiency and a better life.

A recent report from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services stated that as many as 60% of young mothers are living below poverty level, and as many as 80% rely on welfare to supplement their income. The impoverished circumstances of young mothers are exacerbated by the fact that many have limited skills, have dropped out of high school and come from backgrounds with few role models or opportunities for improving their livelihoods.
